Machel Montano – Grand Marshal
The Labor Day parade, which is in its 45th year, is held by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).
The parade attracts over 3 million participants and is led every year by specially chosen Grand Marshals, who have included General Colin Powell, the Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg, and even the present Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo.
Montano was chosen to conduct the celebrations, alongside internationally acclaimed actor/singer/social activist Harry Belafonte and City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn.
WIADCA’s 2012 theme was: “Caribbean History, Culture, and Unity”.
Montano said to be selected to represent his native land in this manner and also to lead what is without a doubt the greatest world showing of Caribbean unity, along with the legendary icon, Harry Belafonte, and Christine Quinn, a phenomenal woman whose work positively impacts the day to day lives of the Caribbean Diaspora in New York, was a humbling experience, as well as a great honour for him.
